Sighted using enhancing techniques [CCD imaging] before sunset at 19:58 BST. The sky was absolutely clear except for the western horizon below 2 degrees. Mr Faruq Bilbe commented: "I was looking from 20:50 to 21:40. I did not get a good view of the sunset (21:56) due to tree cover thus did not take a sunset video. There were breaks in the cloud to the west so I was hopeful but eventually realised that the moon must be below the tree line".

Two of us could see the crescent after sunset. Eng Qamar Uddin commented: "It was cloudy again today (30/7/2022) more than yesterday, and the forecast seems to be the same in most of the UK, unfortunately. I was joined by Br Younes Foster from Manchester who is an experienced navigator (pilot), so we could have easily spotted the moon if it was not totally cloudy, inshaAllah".
Announcement for start of Muharram 1444 AH (Transition)
On Friday 29th July 2022 (29th Dhul Hijjah 1443 AH) the Hilal of Muharram 1444 was sighted in Morocco (MA), but not in the UK (by the naked eye). We have also received a positive sighting report from Morocco Awqaf Ministry (login to view).
Therefore, the start of the month based on the Regional (UK – MA) and Local (UK-only) Moon Sighting criteria are given below.
Regional (UK - MA): the month of Dhul Hijjah 1443 AH will have 29-days and the month of Muharram 1444 AH will start from Saturday 30th July 2022, making Ashura (10 Muharram) fall on Monday 8th August 2022, InShaAllah.
Local (UK-only): the month of Dhul Hijjah 1443 AH will complete 30-days and the month of Muharram 1444 AH will start from Sunday 31st July 2022, making Ashura (10 Muharram) fall on Tuesday 9th August 2022, InShaAllah.
It is recommended to fast on the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th or all 3-days (9th, 10th and 11th) of Muharram, InshaAllah.

Significance of Ashura (10 Muharram) 1. Narrated Ibn `Abbas (R): When the Prophet (ﷺ) arrived at Medina he found that the Jews observed fast on the day of 'Ashura'. They were asked the reason for the fast. They replied, "This is the day when Allah caused Moses and the children of Israel to have victory over Pharaoh, so we fast on this day as a sign of glorifying it."
