The sky was partly cloudy with sufficient clearance. We had just missed the setting of the sun but could still clearly see where the sun had set. We were looking to the left of the sun for a few minutes and then alhamdulillah we spotted the new moon. We stood and observed as the sky gradually darkened and waited until the moon had become covered by a large cloud moving in from the right. Please see the photos attached. Mr Faruq Bilbe commented: "There was a large clear patch of sky as the sun set, but it was too far north to see the moon. After a long wait, I did see the Hilal through the thin gaps in the cloud (located and confirmed by binoculars) but couldn’t get a good photo due to lack of contrast and camera shake. Alhumdulillah patience was rewarded and I managed to get a reasonable shot when the moon eventually dropped below the cloud (c. 1 degree)".

Announcement for start of Muharram 1445 AH
On Tuesday, 18th July 2023 (29th Dhul Hijjah 1444 AH) the Hilal of Muharram 1445 was not sighted in the UK (Local). Therefore, the month of Dhul Hijjah 1444 AH will complete 30-days and the month of Muharram 1445 AH will start from Thursday, 20th July 2023, making Ashura (10 Muharram) fall on Saturday, 29th July 2023, InShaAllah.

Morocco (Regional): the month of Muharram 1445 AH will start from Wednesday, 19th July 2023, making their Ashura (10 Muharram) fall on Friday, 28th July 2023, InShaAllah. See the report from Morocco Awqaf Ministry (login to view).
It is recommended to fast on the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th or all 3 days (9th, 10th and 11th) of Muharram, InshaAllah.
Significance of Ashura (10 Muharram) 1. Narrated Ibn `Abbas (R): When the Prophet (ﷺ) arrived at Medina he found that the Jews observed fast on the day of 'Ashura'. They were asked the reason for the fast. They replied, "This is the day when Allah caused Moses and the children of Israel to have victory over Pharaoh, so we fast on this day as a sign of glorifying it." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "We are closer to Moses than you." Then he ordered that fasting on this day should be observed. (Bukhari) http://sunnah.com/bukhari/63/168 2.
