Crescent Moon Visibility of Shawwal 1444 AH

The crescent visibility map below for Shawwal 1444 (RHS) shows that the moon will be born on 20 April 2023 at 04:13 GMT/UT, but it will not be visible by the naked-eye anywhere in the UK to Morocco (MA) region on that date. However, on 21 April 2023, the moon may be easily seen in the UK and in most parts of the world. Hence, the month of Shawwal is most likely to start from 22 April 2023, InShaAllah. Not seen after sunset: On 20 Apr 2023, ICOUK member Mr Mohammed Zabhier from Birmingham City in the West Midlands County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Partly Cloudy, the crescent was not seen by Naked-eye.


Not seen after sunset: On 20 Apr 2023, ICOUK member Mr Umar Hussain from Birmingham City in the West Midlands County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Totally Cloudy, the crescent was not seen by Naked-eye.

Mr Umar Hussain commented: "We arrived 30 minutes before sunset, we had good view of the horizon and saw where the sunset but as we got nearer to sunset, thick, dark clouds continued to descend on the horizon and the location we were hoping to see the moon. We had 50-plus people looking but no positive sighting. We stayed until moonset in our location".


Blackburn

Mr Mohammad Quraishi commented: "SubhanAllah, we had a negative sighting tonight. Despite clear skies and spectacular views of the western horizon. Blackpool Tower, the Wind Turbines in the Irish Sea and the Isle of Man could be clearly seen on the distant horizon. Yet no Hilal was observed tonight while a large group observed until moonset 21:04".

Mr Muhammad Arshad Dar commented: "We were 40-45 people including men, women and children at our usual moonsighting location at Rivington Road, Bolton. The western horizon was clear with good visibility. We could easily see Blackpool Tower. We had a couple of good binoculars. None of us was able to sight Shawwal Crescent as expected. However, it was good to see more and more people coming out to revive the sunnah, Alhamdulillah".

Mr Tahir Mahmood commented: "I visited the observation site with Imam Asim Chishty before sunset and marked it's location. After Magrib we were joined by imam Ashan Amin of Bristol Jamia Masjid to try and observe the hilal. Despite our attempts no sighting was made and we report a negative sighting".

Shaykh Sulayman Gani commented: "We arrived at Riddelsdown in Purley to observe the hilal for the month of Shawwal. It was partly cloudy and wet weather. After Maghrib Salah we attempted to sight the hilal. Over 40 people attended which included children. The hilal was not sighted".

Mr Juned Patel commented: "On 20 April 2023, I travelled to North Wales so that I could ensure an absolutely clear sky till the moon set time. Luckily it turned out to be exactly as the forecast had said. I saw the tip of the sun going below the horizon as seen in the picture. After the sunset, there was not a single patch of cloud on the western horizon. Mr Hatim El-Harrak commented: "In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the most merciful. On the evening of Thursday, Ramadan 29 1444 AH, corresponding to April 20, 2023, I attempted to spot the crescent of Shawwal 1444 AH, despite the clear weather. The crescent moon was seen, neither with the naked eye nor with camera lenses, and it was not observed from any regions of Morocco. Accordingly, the month of Shawwal 1444 AH, according to the official announcement, is Saturday, April 22, 2023.".

Mr Faruq Bilbe commented: "Tonight I tried another of the sites suggested by Qamar Uddin overlooking Fobney Meadows. The sky was clear and something became visible about 15 minutes after sunset and confirmed with binoculars [Celestron 15x70] that it was the moon. The moon became clearer to the naked eye towards 9 pm and was still visible in the sky by the naked eye when we got home c. 9:30 pm".

York

Not seen after sunset: On 21 Apr 2023, ICOUK member Eng Qamar Uddin from York City in the North Yorkshire County (United Kingdom) mentioned that the sky was Totally Cloudy, the crescent was not seen by Naked-eye.

Eng Qamar Uddin commented: "It was totally cloudy and raining all day in York today, so the moon was not seen, but many places down south (London) and up north (Scotland) managed to see it, Alhamdulillah".


Morocco

Marrakech

Seen after sunset: On 21 Apr 2023, ICOUK member Prof Hassan Talibi from Marrakech City in the Marrakesh-Safi County (Morocco) mentioned that the sky was Partly Cloudy, the crescent was Seen by Naked-eye.


Tangier

Seen after sunset: On 21 Apr 2023, ICOUK member Mr Hatim El-Harrak from Tangier City in the Tangier-Tetouan Al-Hoceima County (Morocco) mentioned that the sky was Clear, the crescent was Seen by Naked-eye.

Mr Hatim El-Harrak commented: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This evening, the crescent of the month of Shawwal 1444 AH was sighted from the city of Tangiers".


Announcement for start of Shawwal 1444 AH

On Thursday 20th April 2023 (29th Ramadan 1444 AH) the Hilal of Shawwal 1444 was not sighted in the UK to Morocco region. We have also received a negative sighting report from Morocco Awqaf Ministry (login to view).

Therefore, the start of the month based on the Regional (UK – MA) and Local (UK-only) Moon Sighting criteria are given below.

Regional (UK - MA):  the month of Ramadan 1444 AH will complete 30 days and the month of Shawwal 1444 AH (Eid-ul Fitr) will start from Saturday 22nd April 2023, InShaAllah.

Local (UK-only): the month of Ramadan 1444 AH will complete 30 days and the month of Shawwal 1444 AH (Eid-ul Fitr) will start from Saturday 22nd April 2023, InShaAllah.
